Mary
Licensed Massage Therapist

educational history I began my training in 1986, with private instructors and in small classes. I have received training in many modalities, including Esalan, Swedish, Russian Clinical Massage, Pre-natal, Gentle Pressure Release, Tellington Touch and Hair Pulling Scalp Massage, Hot Stone, Lypossage Body Contouring, and Lypossage Face-Lift Plus. I have also been trained in Energy Healing using Reiki I and II since 1993, Magnified Healing since 1996, Healing Touch Therapy since 1997, and Reconnection Healing since 2000.
certifications/licenses AMTA, 1989; NCBTMB, 1993; Illinois State License 2004; I have worked in Highland Park since 1987
specialty or areas of expertise I’m really excited about the profound changes that occur with Lypossage Facelift Plus, so it has become my favorite modality. For Body Massage, my expertise is with pressure sensitive clients who need Massage Therapy but can’t tolerate a lot of pressure. Deeply stressed clients greatly benefit from the progressive relaxation techniques that I use. Fibromyalgia clients require sometimes-light pressure and sometimes-heavier pressure depending on whether they are in a quiet phase or an active phase. I enjoy helping a Fibromyalgia client to feel better during an active phase and to move into a quiet phase and maintain it for longer periods of time.
types of techniques I use I use all previously stated techniques in a unique blend for each client, to reduce pain, restore balance to their system, and to activate the body’s natural healing systems for continued benefits.
what is a treatment with me like? My treatments begin with gentle strokes, and as the tissue responds I work as deeply as the muscles allow. Upon request, Energy Work can be used on a “hot spot” or incorporated into the massage. I’m a big advocate of full body massage because any area of limitation affects the whole system. Full Body Massage reestablishes system-wide balance and healing.
personal hobbies, interests I have been a woodcarver since 1997 and enjoy woodworking of all kinds. I also enjoy making craft items for myself and family and friends. I am an avid History Channel and Science Channel watcher, probably making up for not paying attention in school.
why I like my profession Therapeutic Massage results span the whole spectrum of possibilities – from relaxation to rehabilitation to recovery to lifestyle improvements.
long-term career goals My goals for the immediate future include continuing education with emphasis towards understanding how to help each client to feel the most comfort and ease of movement now and into the future. I’d like to see massage integrated into medical/health/lifestyle programs that help a patient/client to achieve optimum health and strength.

Miriam
Licensed Massage Therapist

educational history Cortiva Institute; Chicago School of Massage Therapy
certifications/licenses State of Illinois Licensed Massage Therapist; AMTA Member; Nationally certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB)
specialty or areas of expertise Neck, back, and pelvis; Scoliosis; cancer patients/survivors; injuries (including falls from horseback); repetitive strain; elderly; sports massage; animal/pet massage; or anyone that just wants to de-stress and relax.
types of techniques I use I adjust my range of techniques to the individual's needs. My skills include Myofascial Release, Trigger Point Therapy, Contemporary Western, and Swedish Relaxation massage.
what is a treatment with me like? I start my massages with compressions, gentle rocking and jostling to assess which areas of the body are resistant to movement. This resistance generally indicates muscle tightness and a need for attention to that area. From here on is up to the receiving individual of what type of massage they choose - relaxing or deep-tissue? My love is therapeutic deep-tissue massage. It may not be the most comforting in the immediate sense, but one of the positives is that it brings lasting results in the long run. I find peace in giving relaxation massages for it's meditative qualities and effects of gentle, soothing touch. I try to make sure that the receiver's expectations are met and that they are comfortable.
personal hobbies, interests I love animals, especially horses and the beauty of the wild outdoors. I've been horseback riding for more than 20 years. I am a flutist and enjoy listening to a wide variety of music.
why I like my profession I am truly blessed to be working at such a wonderful place as Therapeutic Kneads. Every one of my colleagues is wonderful human beings and a joy to work with.
long-term career goals A personal goal of mine is to learn equine massage and the Bowen technique (Bow Tech), which is a non-invasive massage technique developed in Australia. I am also interested in energy therapies. I love to learn about alternative therapies and how to integrate and combine them with massage in order to improve one's health and quality of life.
